Do you ever wonder what it truly means to be a leader?
I have and I’ve come to know that it’s not about the titles, the proclamations, or even having “LEADER” conspicuously inscribed on your clothes.
The essence of leadership lies in a fundamental truth: people follow you not because you claim to be a leader, but because you embody leadership qualities.
Allow me to explain.
Leadership does not begin when you (or someone else) announce to the world that you are now a leader; it starts from within you. It takes root when you recognize that you can help meet someone else’s needs or help people achieve something good. It then starts to blossom when you take concrete steps to meet those needs or offer that support.
In essence, leadership is an inside-out journey, meaning it starts on the inside before we see it expressed on the outside.
This starting on the inside involves how you perceive yourself and your role in the grand scheme of things. It’s about acknowledging that you have something valuable to offer, something that will benefit a lot of people.
Your journey as a leader begins when you recognise and believe that you can be a catalyst for positive change. This self-belief is the spark that ignites the path toward genuine leadership.
I have said all of the above to say this: leadership starts with you. It’s a journey of personal growth, self-awareness, and commitment. Only when you wholeheartedly embrace this journey will it draw others to you. Your authentic dedication to this path is what will inspire and retain followers in the long run.
If you’ve ever wondered about what it means to be a leader, remember that it all begins with you. Embrace this truth, nurture it, and see how it inspires and engages people to work with you to create a brighter future.
