Your Q2 Success is Dependent on You Avoiding These Leadership Clarity Mistakes
If you’re like many leaders, you’re already preparing for Q2. For many, this is the last month of the financial year and plans are in place to set new goals, adjust strategies, and prepare for the next phase of growth.
However, before you move forward, I’d like for you to consider this:
Your Q2 will look exactly like Q1 if you do not fix the leadership clarity issues holding you back.
A lot of leaders start a new quarter without addressing the underlying factors that caused misalignment, confusion, or inefficiency in the previous quarter. What then ends up happening is that they fall into the very same patterns of wasted time, drained energy, and lost opportunities for real progress.
My question to you today is this: What are the biggest clarity killers that are leisurely crawling into your leadership?
In today’s post, I’ll be sharing what I consider to be the top three clarity killers. I’ll also recommend ways to eliminate them before they sabotage your Q2.
Clarity Killer 1: The Busyness Trap
Problem: Confusing Activity with Progress
This one right here is one that gets most of us as leaders. We always have something to do; overflowing emails, requests pouring in, things to sign off on, meetings to facilitate and attend, the list goes on…
Imagine spending all that time and using up all that energy, only to find out all of that is not actually moving the needle.
We’ve all been there at one point or another. Constantly on the move, all the while mistaking motion for progress. Thinking that a packed calendar or long hours automatically means we are being very effective.
The truth of the matter: Busyness that doesn’t move the needle is a sign of unclear priorities.
When leaders lack clarity, they end up:
- Spending too much time on low-value tasks instead of strategic or meaningful work.
- Intertwined with unimportant activities.
- Feeling exhausted but not having the satisfaction of saying they’re making real progress.
The Fix: Make the Shift from “Busy” to “Impactful”
- Review your Calendar: Look at the last two weeks. How much time did you spend on strategic priorities vs reactive tasks?
- Define Your Core Priorities: There’s a saying that goes like this; if everything is important, nothing is. Identify your top 3 leadership priorities for Q2 and write them down.
- Use the Clarity Checklist: My free Leadership Clarity Checklist helps you assess whether you’re working on the right things,

Clarity Killer 2: Team Misalignment
Problem: Your Team is Making Assumptions
Leadership clarity is not just about what you know. It’s also about what your direct report/team understands. If your direct report/team is not crystal clear on your expectations, goals, and priorities, they are most likely:
- Working on things that don’t truly matter.
- Operating based on assumptions rather than clear direction.
- Struggling with inefficiencies due to lack of alignment.
Many leaders assume their direct reports/teams will “just know” what needs to be done. But, if as a leader, you have not clearly communicated it, there is a very good chance that they don’t.
The Fix: Over-Communicate Your Leadership Priorities
- Ask, Don’t Assume: Always check-in with your direct report/team. Find out from them what the three biggest priorities for the quarter is. If their answers don’t match yours, there’s misalignment.
- Clarify Your Expectations: Have a conversation to ensure everyone understands the focus areas for Q2.
- Create a Leadership Reset Plan: The Quarterly Leadership Reset Kit helps leaders realign their teams and strategies every quarter.

Clarity Killer 3: Leading on Autopilot
Problem: Sticking to Old Patterns That No Longer Work
Leadership requires a lot of adaptation. Sadly, too many leaders often find themselves stuck in autopilot mode. They rely on the same strategies, routines, and decision-making processes they’ve always used, and they push for them to be used the very same way, in every situation; even when those approaches do not fit the current context or are not delivering results anymore.
Some signs you may be leading on autopilot:
- You’re doing things the same way without questioning their effectiveness.
- Your direct reports/team aren’t interested or engaged with the work.
- You keep experiencing the same challenges every quarter.
The Fix: Take Time to Reflect and Reset
- Challenge Your Assumptions: Just because something worked last year, it doesn’t mean it’s the best approach now.
- Assess What’s Working and What’s Not: Use the Leadership Clarity Checklist to identify where adjustments are needed.
- Make Intentional Changes: The Quarterly Leadership Reset Kit provides a framework that’ll help you refine your approach before Q2 starts.
